CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FUNCTIONAL CONSTIPATION IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Abstract

This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics of functional constipation (FC) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to assess the impact of this condition on the caregivers’ emotions. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 37 children aged 24 to 72 months who were being followed up at the Department of Psychiatry, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital. The results showed that the main symptoms included decreased frequency of bowel movements (≤ 2 times/week), hard stools according to Bristol Stool Scale types 1 and 2, and other manifestations such as straining during defecation, fecal incontinence. This condition caused significant stress for caregivers, with over 90% reporting anxiety and concern related to the child’s constipation issues. The study concludes that FC is a serious problem in children with ASD, requiring early and effective intervention to mitigate negative impacts, thereby improving the quality of life for both the children and their families.
