Objective: To investigate the rate and some characteristics of treatment adherence among patients with schizophrenia.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 155 patients with schizophrenia. Participants underwent clinical assessment, history taking, and evaluation of treatment adherence using the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 with descriptive statistics.
Results: The proportion of patients with moderate or high adherence to antipsychotic medication (MMAS-8 score ≥6) was 30.32% (95% CI: 23,1%–37,6%). In the study sample, 38.71% of patients correctly understood that treatment for schizophrenia is lifelong. The most common reason for not taking medication was the belief that they had recovered and no longer needed medication (53.55%), followed by the belief that they did not have a disease (40.65%). Only 32.26% of patients took antipsychotic medication voluntarily and without concealment.
Conclusion: The rate of non-adherence remained high (69.68%), highlighting the urgent need for educational interventions and long-term adherence support in the management of schizophrenia.
