Objective: To determine the proportion of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients treated with outpatient insulin therapy achieving the HbA1c target of < 7% and to investigate associated factors.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 343 T2DM patients receiving outpatient insulin treatment at the Endocrinology Clinic, University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City, from January to May 2024. Data including age, gender, BMI, disease characteristics, medications, and laboratory parameters were collected.
Results: The proportion of patients achieving the HbA1c target (<7%) was 16.03%. Factors associated with failure to reach the target included disease duration, dyslipidemia, higher insulin doses, increased frequency of daily insulin injections, and concurrent use of multiple non-insulin antidiabetic drugs. The rate of achieving an HbA1c target of >< 7% is higher in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Conclusion: The low rate of achieving the HbA1c target, especially among patients with longer disease duration, highlights the need for enhanced patient education, support, and optimized therapeutic strategies to improve glycemic control
