ADHERENCE TO COMPRESSION STOCKINGS AMONG PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC LOWER EXTREMITY VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY AT THE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER, HO CHI MINH CITY

Background: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is characterized by impaired venous return and increased venous pressure, leading to clinical manifestations ranging from varicose veins to leg ulcers. Although medical compression stockings are an effective non-invasive, first-line treatment, their real-world effectiveness depends mainly on patient adherence. This study aims to determine the proportion of adherence to compression stockings and to describe the demographic and clinical features of patients with CVI.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 101 outpatients with CVI at the Department of Thoracic and Vascular, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City. Data were collected through direct patient interviews using a structured questionnaire that included sections on demographic features, clinical features and the level of adherence to compression stocking use.
Results: The proportions of patients with high, moderate, low and no use of compression stockings were 55.5%; 8.9%; 7.9% and 27.7%.
Conclusion: More than half of the patients demonstrated high adherence to compression stocking use; however, non-use or suboptimal adherence remained noteworthy. Therefore, health education, detailed guidance on proper stocking use, and continuous follow-up and support should be strengthened to improve treatment effectiveness.
